Accessible eruption sites are rare in Iceland, making this combo tour a once-in-a-lifetime experience. This tour is also a great opportunity to understand Iceland’s unique geological wonders and rich natural history. You’ll gain insight into how the island’s dramatic landscapes were shaped by volcanic activity, from towering craters to vast lava fields. Along the way, you’ll discover the delicate balance between Iceland’s raw, untamed beauty and the peaceful, serene environments that make this country so enchanting.

You’ll begin with an exhilarating hike through the eruption sites of Fagradalsfjall and Meradalir, where the land still bears the powerful scars of the most recent natural phenomena. As you trek through the area, the surrounding volcanoes of Litla Hrut and Sundhnukagigar add to the dramatic landscape, their craters offering a glimpse into the island’s fiery heart. Contrast this raw beauty with a visit to the Blue Lagoon, where you can soak in the warm, mineral-rich waters surrounded by otherworldly, moss-covered lava fields. And if time permits, let the serene waters of Lake Kleifarvatn provide a peaceful end to your journey, a moment of contemplation amid the raw beauty.

Pickup

Reykjavik

You will be picked up at the chosen pick-up location. Please note that there may be delays as people are picked up at different locations and traffic can cause delays.

Lake Kleifarvatn

(Depending on the duration of the volcano hike we skip this stop)

The first stop of the day is at Lake Kleifarvatn, the largest lake on the volcanic Reykjanes Peninsula. The lake is surrounded by fascinating geological features such as palagonite and sandstone mountains, formed by ancient subglacial volcanic eruptions.
The lake is surrounded by black basalt beaches and beautiful rock formations that have been shaped by the elements over the centuries. Kleifarvatn has been severely affected by seismic activity in recent years, causing the lake to partially drain. This activity has also created a new hot spring in a corner of the lake. The folklore of the lake gives this beautiful place an extra mysterious atmosphere.

Volcanic eruption location

After 2 summers of volcanic eruptions in Reykjanes, all seemed peaceful and calm until July 2023, when a series of earthquakes signaled that a new eruption was about to happen. And so it turned out, when on July 10th a new fissure opened at Litli Hrutur, north of the 2022 Meradalir eruption site.

The walk to a good viewpoint takes about 2 hours there and back. The route you take can change from day to day, depending on wind and weather conditions. There are a few short and steep sections, but the path is generally quite flat.

Your expert guide will ensure that this adventure is fun, but above all safe and responsible. Depending on the wind direction and the advice of the local safety authorities, the hiking route you take may change.

Grindavik fishing village

The drive through the southern part of the peninsula is beautiful. Thick lava fields meet the Atlantic Ocean, creating a dramatic landscape all the way to the fishing village of Grindavík. Grindavík is one of Iceland’s main fishing ports, where everything revolves around fishing. It’s the ultimate place to get a taste of Icelandic fishing culture.

Grindavík is a beautiful Icelandic fishing village with one of the most active harbours in the country. The village's population of 3300 people bases its livelihood on fishing or fish-related industries. Grindavík provides about half of Iceland's salted fish production.

Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon, known in Icelandic as Bláa Lónið, is a geothermal spa/resort on the Reykjanes Peninsula. The lagoon itself is hailed as one of the modern wonders of the world and has become extremely popular since it was first used in 1976. It is truly a must-see place when visiting Iceland.

The entrance comfort ticket includes a towel, a free drink at the pool bar and a silica face mask. Enjoy a relaxing 2-hour visit to the lagoon and feel completely refreshed and revitalized.

Drop-off

Reykjavik

You will be dropped off at the place where you were picked up that morning. This concludes a day full of impressions and experiences that have introduced you to the real Iceland.

We made fantastic memories on this incredible day! There was so much included: a stop at a traditional fish drying structure, a lake, an area of volcanic activity that created boiling mud, and of course, the hike to the eruption site. It was a perfect end to the day to relax in the blue lagoon after all the activities! Our guide, Kalman, was excellent: he was so enthusiastic and informative about the geography of the area.

Mario was our guide on this volcano hike and the Blue Lagoon entrance tour. He was both informative and very courteous. The day trip was divided into smaller sections, avoiding long, uninterrupted bus rides. Mario made sure all the tourists were well informed of the departure time for each location. Unfortunately, one passenger wasn't paying attention and was late for the departure. Mario was attentive to safety concerns, and all the tourists negotiated the locations without incident. The route was exceptionally well-organized and took us to some amazing volcano sites. At the end of the tour, all the tourists were dropped off at their hotels or a bus stop of their choice. Excellent work! Thank you so much.

My first time climbing a volcano, a great guide, and I was so lucky to have a photographer, Danni, along on the trip. She helped us take many beautiful photos, and her creations are truly masterful.
