Fancy a true Lapland experience? Hop on a snowmobile and ride into the dark forests around Levi, far from artificial lights. Under a starry sky, you'll hunt for the Northern Lights, with stops along the way to take photos and warm up with a hot drink. Thermal clothing, a helmet, and clear instructions make the adventure accessible even for beginners. Participants typically share a snowmobile in pairs, and drivers require a valid category B driver's license.
...The evening begins in the town center of Levi, where you'll meet at the meeting point. Inside, warm lighting, thick overalls, and stacks of gloves and boots await you. After trying on thermals, clear instructions follow: how to control the throttle, brake, corner in snow tracks, and use the signals to communicate with each other during the ride. Even if you've never been on a snowmobile before, you'll quickly feel comfortable. Once everyone is ready, the engines will start softly, and you'll ride in a convoy into the night, away from the village and the ski slopes.
The first few meters are gentle, allowing you to get used to the feel of the steering. The route winds through snow-covered pines and open marshes where the moonlight gives the landscape a silvery glow. The guide chooses spots with minimal light pollution and maintains a comfortable pace, allowing you to ride relaxed yet still feel the thrill. At the first stop, the engine cuts out, and silence falls. Only the soft crunch of snow sounds under your boots. You look up and see a sky filled with stars. Sometimes the Northern Lights appear immediately as a greenish arc on the horizon, sometimes it requires patience. It's precisely that waiting, with the soft rustle of pines and steamy breath in the cold, that makes the first time extra special.
During the break, you'll be served a hot drink. Handy for thawing your fingers and setting up your camera. The guide will provide basic night photography tips and explain what you'll see: charged particles from the sun colliding high in the atmosphere, creating the aurora borealis. When the conditions are right, things can move quickly: a faint glow transforms into moving veils that roll across the entire sky. You'd best see this from an open spot, and the route is designed for that. Between stops, there's time for riding: wide paths alternate with narrower forest tracks, with enough variety to keep things fun without the technical gimmicks. Safety remains paramount; it's about enjoyment, not racing.
After about three hours, including stops, you'll drive back towards Levi. In the distance, you'll see the glow of the village reappear. You'll hand in your gear and only once you're inside will you feel how warm it really is. With an SD card full of starry skies (and hopefully aurora) and cheeks still glowing from the cold, you'll end the evening feeling satisfied. For many travelers, this is the ultimate moment of their Lapland trip: the combination of being active outdoors, the unique silence of an Arctic night, and the chance of seeing the Northern Lights. And even if the aurora doesn't make an appearance, the drive through the wintry landscape is more than worth the adventure.
Practical: Drivers require a valid category B driving license and usually share a snowmobile with a passenger. Thermal clothing, helmets, and gloves make it comfortable, but dress warmly in layers. The evening tour season runs from early winter to spring; times and availability vary by date. Book early during popular weeks, as groups are deliberately kept small for a better experience.
Every day of the week at 8:00 PM.

The activity is really fun. The clothing they provide is very warm, and there's a heating element in the snowmobile's handles, so it's not too cold throughout the entire trip. And the instructor is super friendly and patient.
The trip was a fantastic experience! Riding the snowmobile was a lot of fun, and we were thrilled to see the beautiful Northern Lights. 🙂 The guide and the stop at a frozen lake, where we ate sausage and drank hot juice while waiting for the next Northern Lights, were wonderful and relaxing! We recommend this tour to everyone!
Kai, our guide, was fantastic and took care of me and my two daughters from start to finish! It was definitely different eating BBQ sausages and roasted marshmallows on Christmas Eve! I'm sure we'll cherish this memory.
A fantastic experience!!! We loved every minute of it. Riding the snowmobiles was fantastic for the adults. The kids loved sitting in a cabin in the woods with a barbecue, where our guide told us all about the Finnish language and culture.
My 10-year-old son and I enjoyed the snowmobile ride through the forest and along the frozen lakes. We saw beautiful northern lights and bright stars. Professional and friendly guides, warm overalls and boots, only five snowmobiles, and a lovely cabin in the woods with a fireplace.
The price is absolutely reasonable.
