As night falls over Levi, the real adventure begins: hunting for the Northern Lights with an experienced photography guide. After a short briefing on current weather maps and aurora forecasts, you'll climb into a comfortable minivan and head to your first location. The route is chosen each evening based on local knowledge and live data. Sometimes it's a still lake with reflective ice, sometimes an open fell with a clear view of the sky, sometimes a snowfield far from any lantern. If clouds open elsewhere, the drive will head there. This maximizes your chances of clear skies and minimizes light pollution.

At the location, the guide will guide you step-by-step through the correct settings. Think manual focus, an open aperture, and a shutter speed appropriate for the aurora's activity. If you'd like to practice first, you can take a test shot of a star or a distant light source. If you don't have a camera, you'll be provided with a sturdy tripod or smartphone holder so you can capture surprisingly sharp images with your phone as well. While the first photos come in, warm up with a steaming drink and a snack. Where permitted and safe, a small campfire will add to the atmosphere and provide light for the foreground.

Over the course of the evening, you'll typically visit two to three different locations. This variety creates new compositions and increases your chances of seeing a show. The group size is deliberately kept small, with a maximum of eight participants. This allows for ample time for personal guidance, and you'll never have to jostle for a tripod. Meanwhile, the guide constantly monitors the sky and the measurements. If conditions change, you'll move quickly and efficiently. Trips between locations are kept short when possible and longer when necessary. This gives the evening a dynamic and purposeful feel, just as aurora hunting should be.

At the end of the tour, you'll drive back to Levi with warm cheeks, cold gloves, and a memory card full of stunning photos. The tour is available from early December through March and departs daily during the winter season. Please arrive at the office in downtown Levi fifteen minutes before departure, or take advantage of the included pickup service if you're staying within a reasonable distance of the city center. The total duration is four to five hours, and the activity is suitable for anyone aged ten and older with a reasonable level of fitness.
