On the Jökulsárlón & Glacier Cruise Tour you will take an unforgettable journey along Iceland’s spectacular south coast, culminating in the enchanting Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. Departing early in the morning from Reykjavík, you will travel by comfortable coach through a landscape dominated by rugged mountains, vast lava fields and picturesque villages.
Along the way you will pass impressive waterfalls, including Seljalandsfoss, where you will have the unique opportunity to walk behind the waterfall. You will also visit the powerful Skógafoss, one of Iceland's widest and most impressive waterfalls. The tour also offers breathtaking views of glaciers and volcanoes, including the infamous Eyjafjallajökull, which erupted in 2010 and brought air traffic across Europe to a standstill.
The absolute highlight of the tour is the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, one of Iceland’s most iconic natural wonders. Here you can see giant icebergs break off from the glacier and slowly float in the deep blue water of the lagoon. The contrast between the ice, water and sky creates a surreal landscape. If you’re lucky, you might even spot seals moving between the icebergs. You’ll sail past the floating icebergs in an amphibious vehicle on the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon. This boat tour offers the perfect opportunity to see the Glacier Lagoon in the best possible way, with the chance to hold and taste at least 1000 years old ice.
You will also visit the nearby Diamond Beach, a black sand beach where glittering chunks of ice lie like diamonds on the shore. This is a perfect place to take beautiful photos of the magical surroundings.
On the return journey to Reykjavík, you’ll enjoy the ever-changing landscapes and have the chance to stop at other special places along the way. The Jökulsárlón & Glacier Cruise Tour offers a day of stunning natural scenery, from thundering waterfalls to floating icebergs, and is an absolute must if you want to experience the untouched beauty of Iceland.
Reykjavik
You will be picked up at the chosen pick-up location. Please note that there may be delays as people are picked up at different locations and traffic can cause delays.
The first stop of the day is the lesser known natural wonder, the Stjórnarfoss waterfall. It is a highly recommended attraction for a Ring Road trip route.
The Stjórnarfoss waterfall falls in two stages, both about 15 metres (49.21 ft) high. The lower waterfall falls over a dome-shaped rock in a form of eye-catching symmetry. The photogenic waterfall has attracted many photographers because of its unique appearance. Stjórnarfoss originates from the Stjórn River at Geirlandshraun mountain and flows out of a valley, creating a mysterious atmosphere.
After a few hours of driving you will reach the main attraction of this tour: the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, hailed as one of Iceland's natural crown jewels.
Jokulsarlon was created by the glacier tongue Breiðarmerkurjökull, one of the outlet glaciers of Iceland’s largest ice cap, Vatnajokull. In the 1970s, the retreating glacier left behind a huge pond near the shore that eventually became Iceland’s deepest lake. Another feature you’ll notice in the glacier lagoon are the floating icebergs, which glow in various shades of blue. Some even have brown streaks, due to sediment from volcanic eruptions decades ago.
After the iceberg calves from the glacier, they roll, tumble and drift around in the lagoon, often changing color, shape and appearance. Over time, they break up into smaller pieces and are washed out to sea. It is absolutely breathtaking to watch.
Summer is a great time to explore the lagoon, as you can also take a boat trip to sail among the icebergs, which is an optional extra. Seeing the floating icebergs up close is overwhelmingly unforgettable. Jokulsarlon is also home to vibrant wildlife. Arctic terns nest nearby, beautiful seals swim around or rest on icebergs, and you experience the purest element of Icelandic nature.
Jokulsarlon is popular for its stunning beauty and ever-changing appearance. It has also inspired many filmmakers to give their work a unique touch. James Bond films Die Another Day and A View to a Kill were filmed here, as well as Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Batman Begins and The Northman, all of which had scenes filmed in this area.
The amphibious boat tour in Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon takes 30 minutes and takes you past the floating icebergs. This exciting tour offers a perfect opportunity to explore the glacier lagoon and its main features up close. You will be accompanied by an English-speaking guide who will tell you all about the geology and formation of the lagoon. You will also have the chance to hold and taste the ice that is at least 1000 years old.
The icebergs that broke off from the glacier tongue drift into the lagoon before washing up on land, scattered across the black sand beach like precious gems. The ice on the black sand is a stunning contrast. A truly unique experience.
Perhaps you'll find some peace and quiet walking in the fresh sea air, and maybe even some playfulness from the seals frolicking in the surf.
A seasonal stop, we make a short visit to Fjallsárlón Glacier Lagoon for a great photo opportunity. Fjállsárlón is much less crowded than Jökulsárlón, so you can enjoy the beauty of the incredible views in peace and tranquility.
Fjallsárlón is actually a local favorite, as outdoor enthusiasts enjoy kayaking or zodiac boating on the serene lake, among the icebergs that lie much closer to the outlet glacier. The jagged glacial ice and countless crevasses create an unforgettable icy landscape.
Please note that you will only stop at Fjallsárlón on clear days. If it is too foggy or misty for a good view, we will extend our stay at Jökulsárlón and Diamond Beach instead.
A charming seaside village, Vík í Mýrdal is small with only 300 inhabitants, but full of amazing natural wonders as the southernmost village in Iceland. Here you can find several shops and souvenir shops with great options for visitors to recharge and buy souvenirs.
The unique nature gives Vik vibrant colours in the summer. The black sand beach at Vik is a top destination for its diverse landscapes and beautifully sculpted sea stacks. It all helps to fill the imagination of visitors, with the sound of heavy tides splashing and creating a dreamy, misty world.
Use the stop at Vík to take a photo of the beautiful sea stack Reynisdrangur in the distance.
Seljalandsfoss waterfall
One of Iceland’s most famous and popular waterfalls, Seljalandsfoss waterfall is fed by the glacier meltwater of the famous/infamous glacial volcano Eyjafjallajokull. Seljalandsfoss falls from a 60-meter high cliff and offers a special surprise.
When conditions permit, visitors can walk behind the waterfall and view the entire area from behind the waterfall for a spectacular panoramic view.
You will be dropped off at the place where you were picked up that morning. This concludes a day full of impressions and experiences that have introduced you to the real Iceland.
The bus driver and leader were great!! Learned a lot of cool stuff while driving. The bus ride was smooth and comfortable (I'm tall). The food was good at the stops. All the sights were great and we got to see the northern lights on the way back.
We had the most amazing experience with this tour. It was really well organized, the pick up was on time and the communication was great. Our guides, Gerri and Kelli, were so nice. They told us all sorts of facts about Iceland. We were lucky to have a sunny day at all the spots. The bonus was that Gerri saw the Northern Lights 1 1/2 hours before we got back to Reykjavík and stopped so we could see and enjoy them. It was our best memory of our trip to Iceland and I will never forget it. Thank you!!
A 14 hour journey but TOTALLY worth it - we saw waterfalls, glaciers, lagoons and Diamond Beach. Out of this world but very cold - wear layers!!
The views were amazing! The guide was very informative and realistic. She was helpful with times, advice on food and she informed us about the culture of Iceland (including personal stories about her life in Iceland) and gave us information about what we saw.
The tour was well organised. Our driver Michael was very good. Our guide Gerry was excellent and very informative on all subjects
