The Thingvellir National Park
Thingvellir National Park is one of three national parks in Iceland and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2004 for good reason. This is the place where Icelandic history began and where the fault line between the North American and Eurasian continents lies. Due to the movement of these tectonic plates, it is a beautiful nature reserve that you should definitely see during your holiday in Iceland.
Movement of tectonic plates
The special thing about Thingvellir National Park is that the earth has subsided here and the fault line between the North American and Eurasian continents is located here: also known as the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. As a result, Iceland is pushed apart by about 2-4 cm every year and you can see with your own eyes what the movement of these tectonic plates does to the landscape. From a waterfall and solidified lava to deep gorges filled with crystal clear water. You will find it all there, with the highlight being Almannagjá: an enormous gorge that runs straight through the national park.
