Iconic landmark
Jökulsárlón, Iceland's most famous glacier lagoon, is located in the southeast of Iceland, about a 5-hour drive from Reykjavik. Admired for its breathtaking beauty, it is one of the country's most iconic attractions.
Jokulsarlon is a glacial lagoon formed by the melting ice of Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, which is part of Vatnajökull National Park. It is filled with floating icebergs that break off from the glacier and slowly drift towards the Atlantic Ocean. It is one of Iceland's most stunning natural wonders.
Animals in the lagoon
Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon is a thriving oasis for Icelandic wildlife, thanks to the abundance of herring and capelin brought in by the tides.
In summer, Arctic terns nest here and visitors should stay away from their nesting areas. These birds are notoriously protective and will often dive on anything they see as a threat to their eggs. Hunters also nest along the lake's shores during this period.
Seals are a year-round highlight at Jokulsarlon, often swimming among the icebergs or resting on them. The lagoon provides a safe haven for these animals to relax and interact, which is especially important given that the waters of southeast Iceland are home to a remarkable population of killer whales.
