Spectacular natural violence
Gullfoss waterfall is one of Iceland's most popular highlights. The waterfall plunges into the 32-meter deep canyon of the Hvítá river. You can get very close to the edge of Gullfoss waterfall. The path is only cordoned off with a rope. Of course, the thundering noise is impressive to see up close, but it does come with risks. Due to the mist that hangs around the waterfall, it can be slippery here and during the winter it can even be very slippery.
The two steps of the waterfall
The water in the Hvita River comes from the Langjokull glacier before it plunges 32 metres down the two steps of Gullfoss in a dramatic display of nature’s raw power. The first, shorter waterfall is 11 metres high, while the second drop is 21 metres high. The canyon walls on either side of the waterfall reach heights of up to 70 metres and descend into the large gorge Gullfossgljufur. Geologists believe that this gorge was formed by glacial outbursts at the beginning of the last era.
